Journey to India (4)

Jakarta - Delhi

Kailash Colony Metro Station, Delhi

Jakarta, Delhi, many similarities between the two cities, but much of it we find some differences. Fundamental equations are both equally is the capital of developing countries with a population of more than 10 million inhabitants and is a metropolitan city in the world. But one of the most different is in the planning & development in the urban transport system. Transportation activities are the daily activities carried out within the framework of the implementation of socioeconomic activities such as work, school, shopping, recreation, and so forth. Therefore, the inhibition of the transport sector will automatically hamper social and economic activities of society.

Nowadays, in Jakarta is only 1.2% of public transportation that carried 56% of total urban transportation needs. Another case in Delhi, they have developed a mass Rapid Transportation (MRT) called Metro. According to RITES Report (2008), around 46% of total personal trips in Delhi are completed by using public transport system (Bus and Metro) in 2007-08. Even in the next 10 years, they claimed that Delhi Metro will surpass the London Tube to become the second largest Metro system in the world and is expected to virtually reach every corner of the city (Hindustan Times, January 25, 2012).

Yet according to world competitiveness index, the last 100 years when compared with other new emerging countries (India, China, Vietnam), Indonesia continued to decline from 2000 to 2005, but is slowly improving the competitiveness of Indonesia since 2006 and reached ratings 44 worlds ranking in the year of 2010. Nevertheless, infrastructure indicators still show unfavorable ratings are 82 worlds ranking (Global Competitiveness Report 2000-2010, State of Indonesian Cities 2010).

As the capital city of Jakarta State should be able to set an example in the development of the infrastructure that supports economic development and welfare of the population with sustainable principles and an example for the development of other cities in Indonesia.
